IBM OFFERS ECHOWORX SECURE MAIL BY SUBSCRIPTION: PUTS EMAIL IN "TAMPERPROOF ENVELOPE"
Toronto, ONTARIO - March 2, 2006 IBM now offers Echoworx Secure Mail via subscription, enabling businesses and consumers to simply and easily protect the privacy of their email.
IBM is providing Echoworx Secure Mail encrypted email service to Canadian enterprises and ISPs, allowing users to put their communication into the equivalent of a tamper-proof envelope while it travels through the Internet. With one click to install and one click to encrypt email, subscribers can protect the contents of their digital communications without changing their email applications or service providers.
"The nature of cyber crime is changing, with the criminals committing it now motivated by profit and becoming more sophisticated and tenacious in their attacks," said Nicole Stampatori, IBM Canada's national practice leader for Security, Identity and Privacy. "Partnering with Echoworx to provide Secure Mail provides our clients with strong protection against intrusion."
IBM delivers Secure Mail as a fully managed and hosted service, allowing ISPs and enterprises to install and deploy it quickly and easily, without any additional system management requirements or prohibitive up-front capital costs. IBM also manages the provisioning and maintenance of digital identities, credentials searching, and the delivery of messages to users who may not be subscribers of Secure Mail.
"If you want information about someone, just read his email. Identity theft has risen to unprecedented levels, and email users are becoming very cautious about what information they send across the Internet," said Michael Ginsberg, CEO of Echoworx. "In partnering with IBM, we're introducing a critical email security service that brings email encryption to the mass market."
Secure Mail is the latest capability in IBM's Managed Services portfolio which features email and collaboration tools for businesses purchased for a low monthly fee. The portfolio includes IBM's Application Hosting for Microsoft Exchangeâ„¢, Email Security (antivirus & anti-spam filtering), and Email Recovery. Each capability can be purchased as an individual module or packaged together, allowing clients to pay for only the services they need.
What is Secure Mail?
Secure Mail is one of the first encrypted email subscription-based services to target the masses. When a person subscribes to Secure Mail, a small plug-in is automatically downloaded into his email application. With the click of a button, subscribers can then send encrypted messages. Messages are digitally signed and encrypted automatically before leaving the sender's email application and can be opened only by the intended recipients.
The recipient does not need to be a subscriber to the service or download any software. Unlike most encryption solutions, the Secure Mail offering is simple, using industry-trusted standards such as PKI, S/MIME and X.509 certificates. It does not require complicated certificate registration and can be used easily by non-technical consumers.
ISPs and enterprises who are interested in subscribing to Secure Mail service through IBM are invited to contact their IBM reps or Jordan Kalpin (jkalpin@ca.ibm.com).
