Encryption, Investment in Brand

WannaCry affects 150 countries | Google confirms and puts a stop on a scam affecting 1 million users | Yahoo! announces 1.5 billion breached | Anthem confirms data breach, could impact millions | DNC hacked!

What do these news headlines have in common? Information Security!

In 2015, we saw a record-setting total of nine mega-breaches. Including, one of the largest data breaches ever publicly reported with an astounding 191 million records exposed! This year, the ransomware attack, WannaCry crippled business operations in 150 countries!

While the cause of data breaches vary, email is often the entry point for attacks. In fact, according to research by Echoworx, which polled 1,000 financial services professionals, 62% of  large corporations send confidential information through open, unencrypted email channels.  Did the word ‘invitation’ pop to mind?!  You have to be asking, “why?” Well, according to Ponemon, 48% of organizations said they are challenged by the ability to deploy encryption technologies effectively.

I’ll admit, in the past encryption was difficult to deploy and it was far from user-friendly. Solutions offered little support for mobile devices and required continual operating investments. But, encryption technology has changed.

Today’s digital business is driving customer demand for security, trust, and seamless experiences. Clearly, a more flexible approach to secure business communications is required.  At a security conference I attended last year, Barclays’ Global CISO made a statement that resonated with me. He said,  “the road to a successful digital future leads through security.”

It is time that companies start treating encryption as an investment in their brand rather than treating data breaches as a cost of doing business. That’s why Echoworx is sponsoring the Federation of Security Professionals Conference on Friday, July 14th 2017 at the Hyatt Regency in Toronto. The Federation of Security Professionals is an organization dedicated to education in the field of Information Security.
